Arizona requested the first 60,000 doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine today from the CDC. The manufacturers will fill orders from the states and distribute to local counties and tribes in Arizona. This is a little more than 1% of the vaccine Arizona will eventually receive.
At an afternoon news conference, state and local health officials will discuss how the ordering process is going, who will receive the initial vaccines and how future vaccine will be distributed.

The first 3 million doses available in the U.S. are expected to be Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV), better known as FluMist, a nasal spray. These are approved for healthy people between the ages of 2 and 49. Only some of the 5 priority groups will be able to use it. When the shots arrive, they will be offered first to all pregnant women, children under 5, people with chronic underlying health conditions, people who live with or care for those under 6 months of age and health care workers.
While the initial supply is limited, there should be enough 2009 H1N1 vaccine available in Arizona for anyone who wants it before the end of the season. |
